In order to improve the functioning of the selection system, we completely disassembled the record rack and selection arm assembly. One important thing to note is that you should release most of the springs before removing the cover plate as springs will pull tension on the mounting rods, making it difficult to remove or install the cover.

Here we are starting to disassemble the rack.

Next, we soaked all parts in Varsol for 24 hours. Varsol is a solvent made by Exxon that is sort of like mineral spirits, it is a fairly mild petroleum solvent.

Next, we used Gumout spray carburetor cleaner to remove any remaining junk from the parts, following that up with Con-Tak cleaner. Then, we polished the parts with Nevr-Dull Wadding Cloth and lightly lubricated them with Hammond organ generator oil.

Here are the spacer disks and the platters drying.

Upon re-assembling and giving the shaft upon which the selection arm rides a good lubricating with Hammond organ generator oil, we had good mechanical performance. However, there were several problems with the tone arm.
One was intermittent noise in the tonearm wires. We rewired the phono leads from the tonearm to the jack and the jack to the preamp.

We then found that there was insufficient stylus pressure and that the tonearm would sometimes not set down at the correct point on the record. This problem was traced to the tonearm rest bracket being worn and broken due to metal fatigue. The two requirements of this bracket are that it keep the tonearm on the resting post while the record is rising, and when the record is all the way up, clear the rest post to allow proper stylus pressure.
We used a Delco alternator ID tag that we got from an estate sale to sub for the old bracket and it works great.

Finally here am I with the completed unit.
